A blog about the Game Boy.
With three days left for Repugnant Bounty’s Kickstarter campaign, developer Starlab Games is already looking ahead to the future. After reaching $738 of the $4,063 USD ($908.29 of $5,000 CAD) goal, the campaign seems unlikely to be successful when it ends on June 27th. Here’s the message posted as a recent Kickstarter update:
Unfortunately, it does not look like we will reach our goal. That’s why I have created a Patreon instead! In hindsight, I probably should have done that instead… Here’s the link if you want to check it out! All future updates will be posted on the Patreon. See you there! https://www.patreon.com/repugnantbounty
When asked for comment, Starr at Starlab had this to say:
I hope you’ll support us there instead!

The Patreon can be found here. You can check out some recently-released official screenshots below, too.
I’m relieved that development will continue. I look forward to bringing more updates on this amazing-looking indie game in the future!

Update July 2, 2021: The new date for the Kickstarter is August 18th, see below for the update from the development team.
An email was just sent to newsletter subscribers for Infinity. If you’re not familiar, here’s what was said on the previous post about Infinity:
Infinity was a Game Boy Color game in development from 1999 to 2001 by Affinix Software before it got cancelled because the Game Boy Advance had hit the scene. […]
Incube8 Games is stepping in to help publish in addition to the planned Kickstarter campaign (date TBA.) A previous post mentioned their other GB publishing project, Genesis, going up for preorder recently.
Here’s what was said in the email:
A lot of hard work has been done to make everything happen, and we are proud to announce that the Kickstarter will begin on July 15th! Yes, in 3 weeks!
For the long-time subscribers of the Infinity-gbc.org newsletter (thank you for your amazing support during all those years!), you have been automatically subscribed to the Infinity Kickstarter newsletter. We recommend you have a look at the new Infinity page if you have not already done so:
www.infinitygbc.comAs a reminder to all our subscribers, you will receive an arranged medley of the game OST, for free, as soon as the campaign starts!

Update July 2, 2021: The developers behind Infinity have sent an email update announcing the Kickstarter date has been pushed back to August 18th. Read the email below.
The Kickstarter date has been moved!
– Now on August 18th –
As we continue to prepare for the launch of the Infinity Kickstarter, we decided it would be best to push the date to August 18th.
We thought that despite our dedication to Infinity, some final elements needed to be fine-tuned. It’s mandatory for us to make the best environment for the Kickstarter campaign, and to make this game a reality.
For example, we are waiting on some price updates; Covid-19 has made raw material and chip prices increase a lot since our first estimates.
In light of this, we need to be even more careful to ensure the best future for Infinity. After all, some of you have waited 20 years for it! We will not miss this amazing opportunity to bring you this gem.
Now, some game updates! We thought that you would be pleased to see some character artwork we have worked on! 20 years back, only sprites were done for Infinity; no official drawings were made for the game. Benoît, our character designer, worked from each sprite to make these amazing renders. Below you will be able to see 4 of the 11 characters of the Infinity cast!
Thank you for your understanding, and we’re sorry for the extra wait!

This one comes from Redditor u/Genetically_Generic. The linked video shows the GBA game Pokémon Ruby booting up! Really cool.

I can’t prove to you with graphs and logic that the Game Boy Advance was the best handheld ever made. Mostly because I know it was the DS, and I would accidentally end up proving that. But shhhh, forget that, today is the GBA’s day. I adored my see-through pink monstrosity, and then I adored my ridiculous clamshell GBA SP. (I somehow stopped myself from buying the Micro.)

Happy birthday to the GBA! It launched in the US on June 11th, 2001. I’m always interested in debates around the “best Nintendo handheld,” there’s good arguments for all of them I think!
The linked article is more a personal retrospective on the GBA and its library by Kotaku’s John Walker. Definitely a wonderful trip down memory lane. 🎂

Here’s a really cool site in the same lane as GameBoy.blog!
More than anything I love their editorials and in-depth looks at things ranging from math to crowdfunding.
I’ve talked a little with Emi (managing editor from the site) and I’m so happy that GB Studio Central is now the first link in the new Friends section on the sidebar. 💚

But first, let’s talk a little about some statistics. The final version in that tweet is actually 68 lines of code (I tweeted the wrong number!), each line less than 150 characters long, for a total of 9956 bytes. If you ignore whitespace and comments, it comes to 4720 bytes. That’s too large for the International Obfuscated C Code Contest, but pretty close.

This is quite an in-depth post on making an absurdly-compact new GB emulator. Making one is actually a lot of fun and I recommend the coders out there give it a try. 🙂

While writing up last week’s post on the Kickstarter for Repugnant Bounty, a new Metroidvania-like for Game Boy, I was able to get in touch with the developers at Starlab Games. They graciously agreed to answer some questions I sent over, and provided some brand-new music and screenshots (in color!)
I had the pleasure of hearing from Starr (founder), Taiki, Quait, and Colonel Panic. Their in-depth and thoughtful answers give a deep insight into the process behind bringing Repugnant Bounty to life. Check it out below!
